Question: What happened to Bobbi Ann Campbell to cause her disappearance?
2 of Pentacles – Temperance (reversed) – 2 of Cups
3 of Swords (reversed) – Ace of Wands – The Devil
The Magician (reversed) – Ace of Swords (reversed) – Strength
Disclaimer: Tarot readings should not be taken as absolute claims that something did or did not happen. I only report the meaning of the cards, their relationships and the meaning in the context of those relationships, as well as intuitions I have based entirely on the cards presented in the reading. When/if I say that something happened, in any part of a reading description, I mean that is what I am interpreting from the cards, their positions, and other related factors.
Bobbi Ann Campbell was 24-years-old when she disappeared on December 27th of 1994. One website described her as living with a boyfriend and another said something about her living with her grandmother and daughter. I am not sure which is accurate.
Right off, I am seeing several cards that point to specific types of imbalances in Bobbi’s life at the time of her disappearance. The Two of Pentacles shows that Bobbi was in a mental place where she was trying to figure out how to achieve balance in her life – despite going through what can best be described as tumultuous circumstances. I want to point out that her overall mindset was to overcome problems she was having, and she was weighing her options.
Temperance reversed is a card of imbalance and extremes. Combined with the Devil, this points to problems relating to substance or alcohol abuse. Temperance reversed may refer to reckless decisions or conflict stemming from these types of issues. It seems that Bobbi was coming to the realization that she needed to do something to get her life back in order – to get a sense of peace and harmony.
The Two of Cups is a card that suggests to me she had either met someone fairly recently that was likely an interest to her on a romantic level, or she rekindled an old relation after a period of time had passed. This was a person she had a connection with and because they are coming up early in the reading, it would appear they have at least some knowledge about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. The Three of Swords reversed makes me think one of two things. Either she was getting over a completely different relationship at the time she entered into this one, or she went back to a relationship that ended in heartbreak previously. In the upright position, the card communicates a strong sense of loss or grief that is often linked to the dissolution of a romantic relationship. However, in its reversed position it shows someone coming out the other side of that type of situation – which is the case here.
The Ace of Wands shows me that had a desire to make changes and potentially take a different path than the one they have been on. This card aligns with the idea that her general mindset was to make changes in her life that would bring about balance.
The Devil is coming up as the card blocking this progress, however. The energies and forces associated with this card include addiction, dependency, and a sense of powerlessness over one’s circumstances. It can also refer to toxic types of relationships or any combination of these things. It is telling me that the path Bobbi wanted to take was not going to be an easy one because there were many obstacles. It also suggests that she had gained an awareness that her lifestyle was causing her to feel empty and unfulfilled. She knew she had a lot to overcome but is coming across as motivated to take that all on.
The Magician reversed is a card that cancels out a lot of the more positive upright meanings. It conveys to me that whatever happened to cause Bobbi to disappear was deliberately hidden. This is a card that often shows someone as getting conned or tricked into a situation by a dishonest and highly manipulative person. This is the second red flag that I have gotten in this reading that there is at least one other person who was known to her and knows what happened.
The Ace of Swords reversed indicates she had a confrontation or argument with someone. The card communicates a sense of hostility and someone who wants to get away from a situation or problem. At times, it is a card that reflects acts of violence, but this is not always the case. The most important takeaway here is that there was a significant or notable argument that seems to have triggered her disappearance. It could have been with someone that was not involved in her disappearance but has significance because it contributed to those events.
Strength is telling me that whatever problems she was facing with one or more people, she is coming across as someone who would have defended herself. She had a strong personality and an underlying sense of courage that was carrying her through some really difficult times. Almost half of her cards are major arcana, though, and this points to external forces or factors that sealed her fate so to speak.
Question: Who or what caused the disappearance of Bobbi Ann Campbell?
Queen of Cups (reversed) – 5 of Cups (reversed) – 9 of Wands (reversed)
Card pulled for the Queen of Cups (r): 3 of Wands
The Devil – Page of Cups (reversed) – Knight of Wands
Card pulled for the Page of Cups (r): 6 of Wands (reversed)
Card pulled for the Knight of Wands: 4 of Wands (reversed)
7 of Wands (reversed) – 7 of Pentacles – 4 of Cups (reversed)
The Queen of Cups reversed is showing me a person who was exhibiting the more negative traits associated with this card in general – likely because they are responding to a stressful situation or are feeling down and out. The Queen of Cups reversed represents a feminine and mature in terms of age. It may also represent someone who is a mother or has a motherly nature. Whether upright or reversed, the person depicted here was or is intuitive and sensitive to criticism. If the person represents Bobbi, it is telling me she got hurt on an emotional level easily because she was someone who was largely driven by her emotions.
The Three of Wands is the card that I pulled in relation to the Queen. It makes me think the Queen card represents Bobbi’s state of mind when she disappeared because it also shows me someone who was making plans for the future. It is consistent with the first reading that showed Bobbi reaching a crossroads of sorts where she had a strong desire to get her life together. This card shows someone who has already prepared to take real steps toward these goals too and so it was not just talk.
The Five of Cups reversed is reiterating that Bobbi was on a path of healing from something that happened in her past. I don’t know if she had a relationship that broke up or what; I can only see that she was in a stage of acceptance and healing. She finally felt that she had turned an emotional corner as far as this situation was concerned.
The Nine of Wands is conveying a defensive and stubborn kind of energy. I think Bobbi may have been at odds with some of the people in her life. She was aware that her lifestyle was harmful and dangerous, but she probably got defensive about it if or when others brought it up. There is just this sense of Bobbi feeling as though she had reached a point of wanting to change on her own. It wasn’t about people trying to force her into it. The card does indicate a sense of battle fatigue though too. Now another element of this card, that stands out to me, is a relationship situation where there is conflict because one person is perceived as doing all or most of the work. I don’t know if it’s relevant here, but I am putting that out there since there are so many cups and wands in this reading – suggesting an emotionally charged situation, involving people she knew, surrounding this situation.
The Devil appeared at the beginning of the second row. It is showing the addictive and/or oppressive circumstances as being at the heart of her disappearance. It all tracks back to specific issues she was dealing with. I’m hesitant to write it off as just her having a substance or alcohol addiction because the presence of the relationship cards is also reading as a toxic romantic type of situation. In that type of situation the Devil can refer to someone who has a stalker or someone with an unhealthy obsession with them, or that they are dealing with a highly oppressive and emotionally unhealthy person.
The Page of Cups reversed is an escapism card. It makes me wonder if she had a fight or conflict with someone, as indicated in the first reading, and exited the situation intentionally. What I mean by this is that it suggests that due to her sense of emotional vulnerability, she might have gone off to be by herself to think things over – or she left the situation out of fear or concern for her safety. I’m not seeing a permanent element attached to this that makes me believe she disappeared because she abandoned her old life permanently. What I am seeing is someone who might have been trying to get out of a bad situation that posed a threat to them in some way. It makes me wonder if she was trying to get away from someone or hide from them. I can’t get the idea out of my head that she “fled” from a harmful situation. I would be curious to know if any of her friends at the time knew about this because I feel like she would have shared some details with a close friend.
The Six of Wands reversed is relaying that Bobbi felt like a failure. In her own mind, she was really disappointed in herself. She wanted to change that. She wanted people to see her as capable and recognize her for positive aspects of her life. She cared a lot about what loved ones thought about her – whether she openly admitted that or not. It was a driving force in her life.
Something that concerns me about the combination of the Page of Cups reversed and the Six of Wands reversed is that they really point to a situation she felt she needed to escape. I am lacking some really important information here about the status of her relationships because there’s a reason this is coming up in her readings – more than once.
The Knight of Wands is likely the person she was having a conflict with at the time The Four of Wands reversed – the card I pulled in connection with the Knight – is telling me that she was feeling a lack of support or feeling unwelcome.
The Four of Wands reversed sometimes indicates an instable living arrangement in terms of a person not really having a permanent residence. I try to avoid reading much about a case before I do initial readings on it because it’s easy to inadvertently become biased toward some of the meanings associated with individual cards, but when I was looking for her birthday, it said she left a residence she was sharing with a boyfriend. So I just don’t know how or if this meaning applies. It has the “between residences” kind of feel.
The Seven of Wands reversed is a surrender card. It relates to situations where people feel extremely down on themselves and feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. Given the appearance of the Devil in both readings, this points to a scenario where she sought to escape. A lot of people have a way they prefer to escape when they feel they can’t cope with their situation, such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc.
The Seven of Pentacles is telling me it was not a suicide. She was wanting to take a break, contemplate her situation, and make plans for the future. What is interesting about this card is that it almost seems to convey that she felt she had been successful in getting out of whatever situation she was leaving or avoiding. It is a card that people get when they have put work or effort into something, and they are waiting to see the benefits.
The Four of Cups reversed is repeating a theme that was touched upon in the first reading. She really wanted to try to start over. I think some may read this as her intentionally abandoning her old life, but I am not getting this on an intuitive level. I could be completely misreading this aspect, but in both of the readings she came across as someone who had some strong emotional connections/bonds that I just don’t see her permanently walking away from.
Question: Is Bobbi Ann Campbell alive?
8 of Swords – Page of Wands (reversed) – The Sun (reversed)
I truly wish that I could say that Bobbi is alive, but the Sun reversed in particular is telling me that may not the case. However, that is not information the cards provide in a definitive way – at least in my opinion. Upright, the Sun is a card of vitality and good health. Reversed, in readings like this, can be a disconcerting sign. The Eight of Swords does not help because it shows me someone likely victimized or someone who was trapped into a situation where they became powerless and helpless. The Page of Wands reversed is saying there will at some point likely be news or information that confirms this. I hope that whatever it is gives some solid answers here because there are cards that make it seem as though someone else is somehow directly involved in this – someone she knew and probably someone she was either in a relationship with or had been in the past. That person appears to have the answers to all of this.
The possibility exists that she is alive. The circumstances make it challenging to hold on to that hope, but that doesn’t mean there is none.
